Gold prices dipped on Friday due to a stronger dollar ahead of U.S. inflation data, but economic concerns maintain the safe-haven bullion on course for its second consecutive monthly increase.
Details: Spot gold declined 0.2% to $1,983.01 per ounce by 0915 GMT but was up 0.8% for the month, while U.S. gold futures slipped 0.4% to $1,991.70. According to Ricardo Evangelista, senior analyst at ActivTrades, the weaker dollar and safe-haven trade resulting from economic contraction fears and ongoing turbulence in the American banking sector supported gold prices for the month.
Gold reached a one-year peak at $2,048.71 in mid-April due to the banking crisis. The dollar increased for the day but is expected to decline monthly. A weaker dollar makes bullion more affordable for overseas buyers.
Investor focus now shifts to U.S. core Personal Consumption Expenditures index data for March, due at 1230 GMT. The U.S. Federal Reserve is anticipated to raise interest rates by 25 basis points on May 2-3, which could dull gold’s appeal. Gold investors hope the Fed is nearing the final hike in the current cycle, as suggested by Kinesis Money. If true, gold could continue trading in the high $1,900s, while hints of further rate hikes might push it back down towards $1,900.
Also on the radar are developments surrounding the U.S. debt ceiling. Silver dropped 0.5% to $24.82, platinum lost 1% to $1,066.57, and palladium remained flat at $1,495.13, with all metals heading for a monthly gain.
